If the file is loaded as an attachment, you can download it or use the preview icon to view it within this window. Canvas also displays all course activities here (assignments that have links and course events that show in plain text) along with their associated dates.  You can look to the right of the screen to see the course calendar as well.  It is possible your instructor may choose not to use the Syllabus area of the course.  You might have to look to other areas of the course, such as the home page or modules, to view the course syllabus.
